Music Monday is working hard to get ready for this year’s Treefort Music Fest! We are spending the next few weeks we are focusing bands that will be performing during the festival, this week it’s The Love Bunch!
Started back in the “summer of ‘69” the Love Bunch started when Austin Jensen (Band Dad / Telecaster Aficionado / Recordist and Resident Mixmaster / Tour Bus Driver) and Haslam Marcus (Band Grandpa / Guitarmonger) wanted to start a band. After a few band line up changes the current line-up added DeVonta Johnson ( Beat Wrangler / Cat Dad / Cultural Ambassador) and Ike Borup – (Band Toddler / Summoner of the Low End)!
In his early twenties, Marcus, started to teach himself to play the guitar. He has yet to look back ever since. Austin started to play the drums in middle and high school jazz bands. “After playing drums in a few bands I decided I wanted to try something new and give guitar a shot.” Austin added. Devonta started playing music in the 6th grade for a talent show when he tried to play Blink 182’s Dammit, “it did not go well.” He has come a seriously love way since the fateful talent show! When it comes playing the bass Ike took it up because of family. “My grandpa was a career musician and showed me drums, guitar, and bass growing up. Bass guitar made the most sense cuz 6 strings is too many and only primadonnas play guitar. I still play my grandpa's original Fender Jazz bass through as vintage Ampeg fliptop bass amp at most shows. Gramps would be proud.” Ike concluded.
The band uses the name The Love Bunch because to some it might be a reference to the band mates being a bunch of lovable chaps. The band clarified ‘….but in reality, the word "bunch" used in this context is more akin to a "bunch" in your briefs when pulling on a tight pair of jeans.” DeVonta condlucded that the name to him is “is just an encapsulation of the positive music and vibe we bring.” Much like their unique name the band works hard to make sure their music is just as unique. Austin added “A lot of aspects of our daily lives sneak into the lyrics, good times with friends, places we like to eat, daydreamed scenarios with girls, and crusty skateboard culture.” During band practices or writing they will brign the music to a “grinding halt” to make sure it sounds right.
If you are looking for a feel-good band that brings in musical influences of corny jokes, dusty vinyl records and chocolate milk the Love Bunch is your band. They mix the vibes of Beach Boys, The Black Lips, and The Ventures to create a positively awesome unique sounding band you can’t find anywhere else in Idaho. Make sure to check this band out during this year’s Treefort and Snowfort (feb 29th)
